Teletherapy/Distance Counseling

Have you been having difficulty finding a therapist near you to fit your needs?  Or, despite wanting to get started in therapy, perhaps you have not been able to make it to sessions due to your schedule and lifestyle.  Maybe you are simply not feeling well enough to travel or risk further illness.  All of these circumstances are excellent reasons to consider teletherapy (also called distance counseling or online therapy) as an alternative to in person sessions.  You can connect from the privacy of your home or office, and not worry about the commute, weather, or traveling costs, while saving time and energy you can use for the rest of your day.  You’ll meet with me on a telehealth platform that protects your privacy and we will be able to see each other as we talk.  Read on to learn more about teletherapy and how it works.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is teletherapy/distance counseling?

Teletherapy or distance counseling is the use of telecommunication and information technology to deliver professional services, such as therapy.  You probably already know one of the biggest video platforms people use to communicate across the world called Skype.  We will use a similar service in our work together. This technology allows people to access mental health services in rural areas.  It also helps people who have chronic illnesses, physical disabilities, or other conditions connect to therapy services they might not be able to come to in person.

Can we talk with each other before I commit to teletherapy?

Yes! I offer free 15 minute phone consultations to decide whether we are a good fit for each other.

How do we “meet” for our sessions?

We will use a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant video platform so we can see and hear each other.  Please pick a quiet location where you have privacy and won’t be interrupted.  You can use your computer, your tablet, or your phone to connect online.

Does it matter where I am located for teletherapy sessions?

Therapists are required to be licensed in the states where they provide services.  I am licensed in Illinois and Iowa, so if you reside in either of these states, you are eligible to participate in teletherapy.  As with my in person appointments, I see adults ages 18 and older for teletherapy sessions.

Is teletherapy right for everyone?

There are certain circumstances where teletherapy is not appropriate.  Teletherapy is not for any crisis or emergency situations.  If you are experiencing suicidal ideation, thinking of harming yourself or others, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.  In addition, there are some symptoms and behaviors which are best served by in person therapy.

Can I switch to in person sessions if I start with teletherapy sessions?

Yes! If you would prefer to meet in person, we can schedule appointments at my office in Darien, Illinois.

What if I am going out of state/country or already live out of state/country for a period of time?

We can still do teletherapy sessions as long as you have a permanent residence in Illinois or Iowa.

What if I am a United States citizen living abroad and no longer have residence in the USA?

Please contact me to discuss your particular situation as laws vary from country to country.

What are your rates for sessions?

I offer hourly sessions and 85 minute extended sessions.  My hourly rate is $165 and my extended rate is $200.

What if I have other questions not listed here?
