Substance Use

Sometimes life feels overwhelming and you look to find a way to escape or at least mute all the swirling thoughts and emotions.  When coping takes the form of substance use, it can have far reaching, negative impact on you and those around you.

Perhaps it’s the loss of a loved one, a demanding job, or relationship conflicts.  You find yourself turning to a drink or a pill, something to take the edge off.  You’re stressed.  It’s not a big deal, really.  You don’t even do it every day.  Time goes by.  Problems start to weigh you down further and you find yourself doing it more frequently.  People in your life may express concerns to you they can see something is wrong.  Maybe you already know that and you don’t want things to get worse.  Therapy with an addictions specialist can help.  Let’s talk.

Substances may also be getting in the way of your relationship with your spouse or partner.  It can be a vicious cycle of getting into arguments about drugs or alcohol, feeling upset about what happened and then using again, leading to another disagreement.  Or you might find yourselves talking about work, kids, or the house and feeling stressed afterward, then turning to something to help calm down.

Whether it is alcohol, opioids (such as prescription painkillers), tobacco, marijuana, or other drugs, feeling like you are out control is a scary situation.  It gets worse when you start to realize that even if you try to cut down or stop using, you’re not sure if you can actually do it.  We can create a plan together that fits your goals and walk you through every step of the way to recovery.  I will meet you where you are and continue to check in along the way to make sure we are on the same page.  Recovery is possible!
